Travelling is an exciting, life changing experience that everyone should consider at some point. Some people decide to travel later in life and others (me) decided to start at 16 years old. Many want to start but they are not sure if they can, they wonder about expenses, or think it’s better to start when they’re older, so the question posed is should you travel in your 20’s?
The answer is definitely yes!! Whether you’re in your early twenties, late twenties, thirties, forties or even older its never too late to begin but… I will say your 20’s is the best time to start!
You have more freedom
Most people in their 20’s are not tied down by a mortgage, spouse or kids (if you are, congratulations!) meaning you have more time to spare making it more likely to roam around the world for a longer period of time, and fewer responsibilities, giving you the means to travel without worry of your situations.
Travelling is cheaper
Travelling becomes much cheaper when you find ways to save money on the biggest expenses. This includes accommodations, transport and food. Many airlines, hotels, attractions and tour companies offer discounts to young adults. You just have to keep your eye out. You can also choose to stay in hostels or Airbnb which can be cheaper than hotels for the price per night. A good way to travel is to purchase travels during off-peak seasons when prices are low. I was personally able to find round trip flight tickets from Canada to Europe (Amsterdam and Paris) for less than $500! Girl that’s what I call a steal, it saved me some coins.
If you are new to travelling I would recommend to begin with all inclusive trips this way you are able to slowly learn the travelling process. Things like finding your way around the airport, checking into your hotel, and navigating your way around a different country. Some good websites I’ve used to book affordable all inclusive vacations would be Sunwing.
Great way to learn about different cultures
When you travel you learn about different ways of life, and customs that you may not have known existed. This broadens your perspective and makes you more open-minded. What you learn during your travels can translate into different fields of your life as well.
Great way to make new friends
Travelling can be a good way to make friends, when you travel you meet people from all over the world who share your interests. You can make friends from shared experiences; travelling often involves encountering new and exciting experiences. When people share these experiences, it creates a strong bond as they navigate unfamiliar places together. Networking experiences: traveling often involves meeting people from various backgrounds, including locals and other travelers. Networking during travels can lead to long-lasting friendships and connections. who knows you may just find your future business partner. Travelling is a great way to break social barriers: Traveling takes people out of their comfort zones, encouraging them to be more approachable and open to meeting new people. The shared sense of adventure can break down social barriers. Interacting with locals and learning about their culture can be a profound and enriching experience. These interactions can lead to meaningful friendships and a deeper understanding of different ways of life.
You can make lifelong friends and even meet your future spouse while travelling (that is how my friend met her current boyfriend!) I’m the friend that will tell you to have fun no matter what you do but always be cautious when meeting new people.
Helps you become more independent
When you travel you have to learn to navigate the place on your own. You have to make decisions, solve problems, and get out of your comfort zone. This helps you discover confidence and independence which will flow into different areas of your life. You have to learn financial management; Planning and budgeting for a trip, handling expenses on the road, and making financial decisions independently, all this contribute to improved financial management skills. Learning time management; Traveling involves coordinating various activities and adhering to schedules, whether it’s catching flights, making reservations, or exploring attractions. This enhances time management skills. Learning to be self- resilient; Traveling alone or with a small group encourages self-reliance. Individuals learn to depend on themselves for various aspects of the journey, from finding accommodations to managing personal safety. You have to learn communication skills; Engaging with people from different backgrounds and languages improves communication skills. Travelers learn to express themselves effectively and navigate language barriers independently
Help discover new passions
Travelling can help you discover your true passions or maybe just hobbies you didn’t realize you enjoyed. Exposure to diverse cultures may give you interest in cultures studies. New environment’s may give you interest’s in urban exploration or nature, or visiting museums may give you interest in history, art, architecture or urban planning. Trying new foods may give you interest in culinary studies or witnessing social and humanitarian causes first hand may give you interest in social justice or environmental activism. Maybe going out just might help you realize you like to party and have a good time aha. The possibilities to discover new interests are endless!
Great stories to tell
When you travel you build experiences and memories, these are stories you’ll be able to tell your mom and dad in the kitchen or aunties and uncles at the next holiday dinner, your friends at the next gathering or maybe even other coworkers that don’t travel much themselves. You’ll always have a story to tell and there will never be a dull moment.
Travelling in your 20’s is an excellent idea and I’ve never heard anyone regret travelling the world. So if you’re in your early 20’s or late 20’s pack that bag and catch that flight!
Let me know what country you will be travelling to next?
